Juneteenth Shabbat Morning Service

Saturday, June 17, 2023 28 Sivan 5783

9:30 AM

Come join in Beth El's inaugural Juneteenth Shabbat Morning Service. During the service, there will be an opportunity to learn more about this new holiday, hear poetry and prose written about it, and sing in unison a song referred to as the Black National Anthem ("Lift Every Voice and Sing”). The morning has been put together by Rabbi Alex and Joan Charlson. Please join us for light refreshments at the kiddush following, sponsored by Beth Pomerantz in honor of the 60th anniversary of her Bat Mitzvah, along with Lynda Abraham-Braff and Joan Charlson. To join virtually, see weekly email. JUNETEENTH is a three year-old federal holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Its name is derived from “June” and “nineteen" and is celebrated on the anniversary of the order issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.
